Luke Sutherland, the mastermind behind Bows, really knows how to drape a gauze of sparkling sensuality on top of his work. His second release, Cassidy, contains hazy, Spiritualized-sized orchestration, Gus Gus/Massive Attack-styled trip-hop, and a Low-like sense of minimalism. On Cassidy, guitars sound like harps, and hushed, breathy vocals (from Sutherland and guests from acts like Speaker Bite Me and Snowpony) become naked siren songs. Beats appear and disappear in vapor trails within the tracks. The overall sound may float near shoegazer, slowcore, and drum & bass, but the music comes in cloudy forms that change and lose shape once you try too hard to categorize them. Bows uses basic vocal and synthetic sounds to inflate the songs, making them rise to heavenly heights of narcotic pop, but the twinkle of bells and organs keeps the innocence level just as high. Cassidy is a dreamy record, one that brings all the aural comforts of Slowdive with the additional kick of the occasional beat to keep the disc moving. --Jennifer Maerz

Although a fair percentage of the elements found on Bows' mildly disappointing debut carry over on Cassidy, it's a near-quantum leap from being occasionally great and rather uneven to thoroughly wonderful and fully luscious. The second album from former Long Fin Killie vocalist/multi-instrumentalist wonder kid Luke Sutherland's Bows project shows that the first wasn't just a purging of stray ideas, demonstrating he should have done whatever possible to keep his relatively standard rock band together. Despite the inevitable law of diminishing returns, The Matrix Revolutions is quite satisfying as an adrenalized action epic, marking yet another milestone in the exponential evolution of computer-generated special effects. Picking up precisely where The Matrix Reloaded left off, this 130-minute finale finds Neo (Keanu Reeves) at a virtual junction, defending the besieged human enclave of Zion by confronting the attacking machines on their home turf, while humans combat swarms of tentacled mechanical sentinels as Zion's fate lies in the balance. It all amounts to a blaze of CGI glory, devoid of all but the shallowest emotions, and so full of metaphysical hokum that the trilogy's detractors can gloat with I-told-you-so sarcasm. And yet, Revolutions still succeeds as a slick, exciting hybrid of cinema and video game, operating by its own internal logic with enough forward momentum to make the whole trilogy seem like a thrilling, magnificent dream. -- Jeff Shannon

Leatherheads is a sort of two-fisted homage, simultaneously celebrating the early, unstructured days of professional football and the screwball comedies of the 1930s and 40s. George Clooney stars as "Dodge" Connelly of the Duluth Bulldogs, a wily (if a bit long in the tooth) player whose team goes bankrupt. His solution is to lure a war hero and star of the college-football circuit, Carter "The Bullet" Rutherford (John Krasinski from the American version of The Office) to join the team and, through the sheer force of his celebrity, legitimize professional football. Little does Connelly know that Rutherford's war record is being scrutinized by reporter Lexie Littleton (Renee Zellweger) and what she uncovers may undermine the whole scheme. Leatherheads isn't seamless--at times the screwball flavor feels forced and Zellweger's performance is labored--but those few awkward elements only emphasize how zippy and fun the rest of the movie is. Clooney also directed and demonstrates some real flair with editing and letting the fringes of the story be as vital as the main plot. Krasinski, with his goofy handsomeness and a streak of Jimmy Stewart charm, shows real promise as a movie star. Though Leatherheads has plenty of broad slapstick (and most of it is pretty funny), the movie's real comic richness comes out in offhand gestures and sly revelations of character.
