The rock & roll road show never really caught on, which is surprising given that Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen revue showed tour dogs how it's done. Recorded live at New York's Fillmore East in the spring of 1970, this CD (as well as a film of the same name) documents a slapdash extravaganza (the whole thing was conceived, organized, and abandoned over the course of two months) that overflows with big, brassy, rockin' soul. Front and center is Joe Cocker, a spastically charismatic Brit soul shouter. The bandleader is Leon Russell, playing some of the best rock piano ever waxed. And the crack company (boasting 21 singers and players) features the Rolling Stones' future horn section and Derek & the Dominoes' rhythm-section-in-waiting. Cocker shines on "Cry Me a River," "Give Peace a Chance," "The Letter," and a slew of other covers that benefit greatly from the volcanic arrangements whipped up by Russell and Chris Stainton. It's hard to believe that this is the debut CD created by award-winning performance-art sensations the Blue Man Group, whose off-the-wall and high-tech, highly percussive show has been an off-Broadway hit since the beginning of its uninterrupted run in 1991. This CD is not a soundtrack; while some pieces appear in the show, they are presented here with extra instruments, performers, and recently developed instruments. In addition to making abstract paintings by pouring paint onto kettledrums then bashing on them until the color pours onto an awaiting canvas, the Blue Man Group make their own instruments out of unexpected, often very simple materials. Creations used to make this record include air poles, the big drum, the PVC instrument, the backpack tubulum, and the drum wall (no, David van Tieghem is not a member of the group). Those homemade instruments notwithstanding (which are most striking visually anyway), the heavily rhythmic nature of the music, combined with the guitar as a focal element, reminds one of early-to-mid-1980s art-rock. The opening salvo--a two-minute number--starts off subtle and pleasing enough, with slowly building layers of percussive sound and overlapping soundtrack-y guitar lines vaguely reminiscent of Ennio Morricone, the great soundtrack composer that everyone rips off. All were widows, with the exception of the divorced Dorothy. Created by Emmy-winning producer Susan Harris (Soap), The Golden Girls re-ignited the careers of 1970s TV veterans Arthur (All in the Family, Maude) and White (The Mary Tyler Moore Show). At the same time, it made stars of McClanahan (who co-starred on Maude), by playing a comic version of A Streetcar Named Desire's Blanche Dubois, and the scene-stealing Getty, made to look older than her actual age (she and Arthur were born the same year). Notable guests to lend their talents to the first season include Star Trek: Voyager's Robert Picardo ("The Operation"), Alice's Polly Holliday ("Blind Ambitions"), and WKRP in Cincinnati's Gordon Jump ("Big Daddy"). Sporadically amusing as a yuppie comedy and rather off-putting as a wannabe sex farce, the movie's still recommendable for its lively cast and a breezy style that almost succeeds in updating the conventions of vintage screwball comedy. Whitton is a standout performer here, so you may wonder why her comedic talent has been underrated, apart from a good role in the first two Major League movies. After suspect lineups and mug-shot books yield nothing, Samuel, in the most memorable scene of the film, recognizes the murderer as a narcotics agent whose picture he sees in the precinct. Once Book realizes that the police chief is in on it, too, he whisks Samuel and Rachel back home to Amish country, where he himself goes into hiding as a plain Amish man. The juxtaposition between the life of the Amish and the violence of inner-city police corruption work surprisingly well for the story, and Kelly McGillis as the falling in love widow gives an almost perfect performance. Directed by Peter Weir, the film is extremely successful in drawing the viewer into its world and, accordingly, is immensely entertaining. The only thing that mars its polish is the one-dimensional, almost cartoonish handling of the upper-echelon police corruption--a subtler, more realistic treatment of this aspect of the story would have rendered the film near perfect. --James McGrath

Firefights are fast, frequent, and bloody, and the weapons feel as they have real force to them. The enemies in Ubersoldier are not exceedingly bright, but they're often cunning and extremely reactive. They will open up their machine guns the moment they see you and will heave grenades that will force you to clear out quickly -- that is, if you're not blown up first! In Ubersoldier, the ESRB-mature rating is for good reason. When you shoot a guy, the nearby walls and floor run red with blood, and if you hit him in the face a few times, you're screen will soon fill up with a reddened, leaking pulp. If an enemy has the misfortunate to end up in close proximity to a grenade blast, he will grab his head and stumble about, wailing in agony until you put him out of his misery. In fact, putting a few enemies temporarily out of service with a grenade, only to finish them off while they scream and suffer, is a macabre but effective technique. You will get to see some cool scripted events too, such as an enemy falling off a rooftop after getting shot, only to hit a power line in an explosion of sparks on the way down. The designers thoughtfully scattered just enough explosive fuel barrels and oxygen tanks around the levels to add to the mayhem, creating loads of smoke and fire, flying bodies and debris. Indoors, the game takes you from dank sewers to a plush auditorium, from a disgustingly urine-soaked bathroom to human experimentation laboratories, and everything in between. The lighting effects are well thought out and vary from location to location, and the walls and floors are liberally decorated with appropriate furnishings and odds and ends. The backgrounds are all animated, with air-duct fans that rotate, large pieces of machinery that chug and whirr, and control panels that blink and flash. Not for those who are squeamish or too easily startled, Ubersoldier boasts smooth battles that have plenty of visceral carnage, well-paced missions, and an overall strong sense of forward momentum that keeps you active without ever feeling harried.
