The "greatest racehorse of all time" mantle fits easily around the neck of Secretariat, the 1973 Triple Crown winner. So why not a movie version of this champion's life? Secretariat begins in the late '60s, with some good behind-the-scenes material on how thoroughbreds come to be (there's flavorful atmosphere inside the horsey world, including an account of Secretariat's ownership being decided by a coin flip as part of an old-school agreement). A highly lacquered Diane Lane plays Penny Chenery, the inheritor of her father's stables, who segues from being an all-American mom to running a major horse-racing franchise; reliable character-actor support comes in the form of John Malkovich, as a gaudily outfitted trainer, and Margo Martindale, as Chenery's assistant. Screenwriter Mike Rich and director Randall Wallace must do some heavy lifting to make Lane's privileged millionaire into some sort of underdog--luckily, the hidebound traditions of the male-dominated racing scene provide some sources of outrage. The need to stack the deck even more leads the movie into its more contrived scenes, unfortunately, as though we needed dastardly villains in order to root for Penny and her horse. Meanwhile, attempts to reach for a little Seabiscuit-style social relevance don't come off, and a curious religious undertone might make you wonder whether we're meant to assume that God chose Secretariat over some less-deserving equine. The actual excitement of the races can't be denied, however, and Secretariat's awe-inspiring win at the Belmont Stakes remains a jaw-dropping, still-unequaled display of domination in that event. After an impressive debut season, the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars roars back for a sophomore slate of adventures that tops its predecessor in both action and mythos-related dramatics. Situated in the Star Wars timeline between Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, the 22 episodes center around Anakin Skywalker's promotion to Jedi Knight in an attempt to rally the Jedis in the face of General Grievous's attacks. Joined by Obi-Wan Kenobi, he's sent to the planet Geonosis in pursuit of the villain, only to find its population enslaved--and worse--by the Separatists. The fight for the people of Geonosis is easily the highlight of the series, but secondary story lines offer solid intrigue as well, most notably in the arrival of bounty hunter Cad Bane, whose mission is to find children sensitive to the Force, and the appearance of Boba Fett, who vows to avenge the death of his father by Mace Windu. A rampaging giant monster, scads of political intrigue, and some genuinely impressive battle sequences all add to the enjoyment, but what really elevates season two is its darker tone, as evidenced in "Brain Invaders," where Anakin's torture of a prisoner gives a hint of his future, and the terrifying, zombiefied prisoners of Geonosis. The more serious approach, as well as the lack of comic relief (most notably, no Jar Jar Binks), will undoubtedly please adult Star Wars fans, though younger devotees might be somewhat disturbed by the turn of events; thankfully, there is plentiful action and derring-do to balance out the murkier deeds. Extras include substantive featurettes in which director Dave Filoni and his crew discuss a quartet of episodes, including the Geonosis story line and the influence of Godzilla on their own reptilian menace. The epic film shows the bombing of Pearl Harbor from both sides in the historic first American-Japanese coproduction: American director Richard Fleischer oversaw the complicated production (the Japanese sequences were directed by Toshio Masuda and Kinji Fukasaku, after Akira Kurosawa withdrew from the film), wrestling a sprawling story with dozens of characters into a manageable, fairly easy-to-follow film. The first half maps out the collapse of diplomacy between the nations and the military blunders that left naval and air forces sitting ducks for the impending attack, while the second half is an amazing re-creation of the devastating battle. While Tora! Tora! Tora! lacks the strong central characters that anchor the best war movies, the real star of the film is the climactic 30-minute battle, a massive feat of cinematic engineering that expertly conveys the surprise, the chaos, and the immense destruction of the only attack by a foreign power on American soil since the Revolutionary War. The special effects won a well-deserved Oscar, but the film was shut out of every other category by, ironically, the other epic war picture of the year, Patton. --Sean Axmaker
