Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

Fascinating, discomfiting, and poignant (sometimes all at once), Paris Is Burning documents New York City's recherché "ball" circuit, where members of the black and Latino gay, transvestite, and transsexual communities compete to see who can wear the most outlandish outfits and dance, pose, and generally show off to most outrageous effect. These are folks who live with a double whammy of discrimination, as they are minorities both sexually and racially. But while their tales of rejection by both society and their own families are woeful and bitter, the participants come alive when they hit the "runway" (actually the floor of some old gymnasium) to strut their stuff, liberated from the pressure of blending in with the mainstream. "Whatever you want to be, you be," says one, whether it's a school kid, a country club polo player, a high-rent executive, a character from television's Dynasty (which for some represents the dernier cri in elegance and wealth)… anything goes. Along the way, we meet characters with names like Pepper Labeija, Venus Xtravaganza, and Willi Ninja; we also learn about "reading" (i.e., dissing your competitors), "shading" (a more subtle, non-verbal version of the same thing), and "voguing" (later adopted by Madonna, it combines the poses and haughty looks of your average supermodel). Critics at the time of the film's original 1990 release tended to focus on the sadness and not-so-quiet desperation of these people's efforts to transcend their circumstances and become one-night legends, but overall, Paris Is Burning comes across as simply a damn good time. --Sam Graham

Adrian Monk is still "the man" as this brilliant fourth season demonstrates. Not that his confidence in his crime-solving abilities isn't tested from time to time. In the fun season-opener, Monk finds himself upstaged by low-rent private eye Marty Eels (guest star Jason Alexander in a spinoff-worthy role). The very flappable Monk is further undone by Eels' seemingly uncanny ability to find clues in the baffling case of a jewelry store robbery ("He's cheating," Monk protests in vain). This is something of a "threshold" season for Monk, to quote his psychiatrist, who is moved to openly weep when Monk uncharacteristically allows a glass to go uncoastered at one point. But his obsessive-compulsive disorders still get the best of him, as in one of the season's more clever episodes, "Mr. Monk Goes to the Office," in which Monk, going undercover, is blissfully in his element as an "office drone," doing the same tasks day in and day out. Just as he is accepted as one of the office gang, he alienates them by not participating in a bowling tournament (it must be the shoes). Tony Shalhoub, a two-time Emmy-winner for his nuanced performances as Monk, was nominated for his third Emmy for this season. One of his finest hours is "Mr. Monk and Mrs. Monk," in which it appears that his beloved late wife, Trudy, is not only still alive, but a suspect in a murder. This season also develops Monk's relationship with his new personal assistant, Natalie (Trayler Howard). In "Mr. Monk Gets Drunk," it's all about trust when Natalie initially doesn't believe Monk's implausible tale of a disappeared wine-country-inn guest Monk claims to have met the night before. Genius is pain, John Lennon once said, and this applies to Monk. His neurotic tendencies alienate him from the mainstream. In "Office," he so wants to be accepted that he writes conversational cue cards, and the solving of the crime doesn't compensate for him being a cubicle laughingstock. But as the series progresses, Monk is getting better, so much so, that Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) informs him that he is being put under contract retainer for "16 homicides a year." With a sly nod to the series' renewal, Stottlemeyer tells him they best take things "one year at a time." --Donald Liebenson
